The Dutch pioneer in cultivated meat, Mosa Meat, has organized the first official tasting of their Mosa Burger. This marks the first time a cultivated beef product has been tasted in the EU since the introduction of a ‘code of practice’ in 2023. This code allows tastings of cultivated foods under controlled conditions before obtaining EU-wide sales approval. Participants included Dutch cattle farmers, food developers, and industry representatives who provided their feedback to Mosa Meat.
The main aim of this tasting was to assess the market readiness of the product and gather feedback from culinary experts. Mosa Meat seeks to further improve their product based on this valuable input. CEO Maarten Bosch highlighted the unique opportunity to share the burgers with experts outside the company. He explained that the first tasting specifically focused on evaluating the potential of cultivated beef fat as an ingredient in combination with plant-based ingredients. This fat is crucial for the flavor, aromas, and texture of beef. Bosch noted that the cultivated fat has a very positive impact on the product quality.
Participants at the tasting were enthusiastic about the taste and texture of the Mosa Burger. One of them said: “The burger really tasted like meat. I usually don't eat meat, but I miss the taste, and this could be a way to add it back to my diet.” Another taster added: “I thought the burger was delicious. It was juicy and succulent.”
The tastings were organized following the opening and successful start of production in Mosa Meat’s scale-up facility. This comes after achieving B Corp status last year and raising over €40 million in new financing this year.
