Meat consumption in the Netherlands increases

  • 24 September 2019

The total consumption of meat and meat products (based on carcass weight) per capita in the Netherlands in 2018 will be just over 77 kg. This quantity is more than half a kilo above the consumption in 2017. This is the first time in ten years that there has been a slight increase in meat consumption figures. The increase is mainly due to an increase in the consumption of poultry meat and a marginal increase in pork and beef. The figures for veal, sheep, goat and horsemeat remain the same as in previous years.

The proportions of the various types of meat will hardly change in 2018 compared to previous years. Almost half of the consumption in 2018 - more than 36 kg - consists of pork. Poultry meat and beef together account for almost the other half of meat consumption in the Netherlands (38 kg).

Carcass weight

The figures presented show consumption based on carcass weight, i.e. meat including bone, fat and rind. As a rule of thumb, about half of this is actually consumed as meat and meat products.
