Meat consumption hits historical low in 2022

  • 04 October 2023

The recently published "Meat Report 2023" reveals a striking trend: Dutch people appear to be gradually reducing their meat consumption. According to the latest figures from Wageningen University & Research, the total consumption of meat and meat products per Dutch citizen has dropped to a historic low of 75.0 kg (based on carcass weight) in 2022. This signifies a decrease of more than a kilogram compared to the previous year, 2021. In fact, since the first report in 2005, this is the lowest consumption figure.

This trend, which began after 2019, indicates a reduction of nearly 3 kg compared to the 77.8 kg consumed in 2019. Notably, the consumption of beef and poultry has significantly decreased compared to 2021, while pork consumption has remained stable.

Comparison with VCP

These findings align with the results of the Food Consumption Survey (VCP) conducted by the RIVM. Although there are methodological differences between the VCP 2019-2021 and the Meat Report 2023, the overarching trend is consistent: the decline in meat consumption. Interestingly, despite this decrease, the meat intake of the Dutch remains considerably higher than the recommended amounts in the "Schijf van Vijf" (Dutch food pyramid).

Influence of inflation

In an effort to understand the underlying causes of this trend, the Meat Report highlights the influence of inflation. 2022 was characterized as an 'inflation year.' It turns out that, in particular, meat types most affected by inflation, such as beef and poultry, saw a significant decline in sales through supermarkets and local butchers. Pork, which was less impacted by inflation, showed a less pronounced decrease.

In conclusion, the figures indicate that the Dutch are becoming increasingly conscious in their meat choices. The future remains uncertain, but the current trend suggests a changing consumption pattern.
