Major food companies turn their backs on Nutri-Score

  • 30 September 2024

The introduction of Nutri-Score in the Netherlands is facing significant resistance. Several major food producers are refusing to place the label on their packaging. As a result, the system, which was intended to help consumers make healthier choices, is at risk of failing. Companies argue that the calculation method behind Nutri-Score does not align with their expectations or goals.

Criticism of the calculation method

One of the biggest opponents of Nutri-Score is Unilever. The company has decided not to use the label on well-known brands like Calvé, Conimex, and Unox. Unilever has expressed strong criticism of the scoring algorithm, particularly the difficulty of improving product ratings. The role of portion sizes in the scoring system is also being questioned, as this may reduce the incentive for companies to make their products healthier.

Non-alcoholic beer without Nutri-Score

Heineken, known for its 0.0 non-alcoholic beers, also sees no benefit in using Nutri-Score. The company aims to avoid confusing consumers by placing the label on non-alcoholic beers while excluding it from alcoholic ones. Other dairy producers, such as FrieslandCampina, are still considering whether to adopt the label, while Arla Foods and the Dutch Dairy Association have already expressed their concerns about Nutri-Score.

Uncertainty surrounding Nutri-Score’s future

Despite resistance from various companies, some manufacturers, like Nestlé, have already implemented the label. Supermarkets are also supporting the initiative by adding Nutri-Score to their private label products. However, the future of Nutri-Score remains uncertain, partly due to the lack of clear data on its current usage.
