LTO/NOP Pluimveehouderij has urged the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality to immediately impose a nationwide poultry confinement order. This request follows the confirmation of bird flu at a farm with organic laying hens in Putten and a potential outbreak in Germany, just across the border near Nijmegen.
According to Kees de Jong, chairman of LTO Pluimveehouderij, waiting for advice from the Expert Group is not a responsible option. The current migratory bird season significantly increases the risk of outbreaks, he stressed. “With cases in neighboring countries and now here, we must minimize risks. The chickens need to be brought indoors as soon as possible,” he stated.
The infected farm in Putten has already been cleared. No other poultry farms are located within a one-kilometer radius of the site. However, there are 13 farms within a three-kilometer radius. These are currently undergoing clinical screening by the NVWA to prevent further spread.
With this call for immediate action, LTO aims to mitigate further damage to the poultry sector.
