Lidl introduces new minced meat mix with pea protein

  • 22 August 2024

Lidl is taking an innovative step in the Dutch food industry by introducing a partially plant-based minced meat mix. This product, consisting of 60% beef and 40% pea protein, offers a sustainable option for ground meat enthusiasts without compromising on taste. The mix promises not only a lower CO2 footprint but is also significantly cheaper than traditional beef.

A hybrid product for a more sustainable future

With the launch of this ground meat mix, Lidl is responding to the growing demand for sustainable food options. The product is now available in all of the supermarket's stores and targets consumers who are conscious of reducing their environmental impact. According to Geert de Vries, a buyer at Lidl, the ground meat mix retains the same flavor as pure beef while being both more sustainable and affordable. Priced at €2.29 for 300 grams, the mix is said by De Vries to be ideal for traditional dishes like pasta bolognese or classic meatballs.

Lidl reduces prices of plant-based products

In addition to introducing the ground meat mix, Lidl has also permanently reduced the prices of basic plant-based products. This aligns with the supermarket’s broader ambition to increase the share of plant-based proteins in its assortment to 60% by 2030. By aligning the prices of plant-based alternatives like quark, yogurt, and meat substitutes with, or even lower than, those of animal-based products, Lidl aims to make sustainable choices more accessible to a wider audience. According to Martine van Haperen from Proveg, Lidl is making an important move towards more sustainable food consumption in the Netherlands.
