KIDV launches The State of Sustainable Packaging

  • 23 July 2020

The Knowledge Institute for Sustainable Packaging (KIDV) published The State of Sustainable Packaging on 23 July 2020. In this publication, the KIDV indicates how the international packaging world can ultimately achieve intrinsic sustainability through recycling and circularity. "One hundred percent circularity is a utopia," says KIDV director Chris Bruijnes. "That's why we have to work on packaging that does not harm people and the environment.

The State of Sustainable Packaging is a strategic view on the necessary cooperation and innovations in the field of sustainable packaging. The publication identifies social and economic bottlenecks that stand in the way of sustainable packaging. The causes are diverse, which is why there is no simple solution available.

To tackle the bottlenecks, the KIDV has drawn up a strategy with three innovation tracks, with effects in the short, medium and long term. They range from better and more recycling - which is already happening in some countries - to more circularity and ultimately to intrinsic sustainability. Chris Bruijnes: "The entire chain has to work and not shy away from doing production, logistics and consumption completely differently. This way of innovating is not compatible with the going concern in business operations and requires orientation towards the future. We argue for the development of new chains with entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers and citizens/consumers to give direction to the transition to the intrinsically sustainable society and to steer it in that direction".

This autumn the KIDV will start implementing the strategy from The State of Sustainable Packaging. On the 17th of September (16.00-17.30 hrs) an online event will be held with various organisations from Europe. In the period thereafter, activities will be organised with and for these international partners to further concretize the path to intrinsically sustainable packaging.
