All disposable cups contain plastic. Even the cardboard cups have an inner layer of thin plastic to prevent leaks. There have been disposable cups with a bioplastic film layer on the market for some time now. But they also have to be recycled in special incinerators; something that is rare in practice. So we still throw away millions of these cups every day. Worldwide, that's 16 billion disposable cups a year.
BrandBase, a Dutch company, took up the challenge to develop an environmentally friendly alternative that works just as well as disposable plastic cups. Paul Alberts, founder of Brandbase: "This means that you have to make a cup that can handle both hot and cold drinks, is suitable for printing and doesn't cost much to make. And we succeeded. Our cups are already for sale from € 0.03 each".
The Jungle Cup® has obtained all the necessary strict environmental certificates, including the most important, the 'OK compost HOME' certificate, which indicates that it can be composted naturally, without industrial processing.
Jungle Cup® is the first disposable cup that is 100% compostable at home. So after use, the Jungle Cup® can be disposed of in a compost bin. After 12 weeks these cups start to disappear. Bioplastic takes about 1.500 years to disappear... Real plastic never completely disappears. The Jungle Cup® helps in the fight against Ocean Plastic. The lid is made of bagasse, which is the pulp of sugar cane.
For every cup sold, the Rainforest Trust receives a percentage of the proceeds. Paul Alberts: "Those proceeds are used to protect the rainforest, 1m2 per cup to be exact.
