Jumbo Supermarkets is helping customers reduce food waste by including the ‘Use first’ tape with online orders during the Verspillingsvrije Week (No Food Waste Week). In collaboration with the Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling (Together Against Foodwaste) foundation and the Dutch Food Center, Jumbo provides this tape to help mark products that should be used first. Research shows that households using the tape waste an average of 28% less food. The tape is made from recyclable paper and can be used in the fridge, freezer, or pantry.
Over the past few years, Jumbo has implemented various measures to combat food waste in its stores. More than 700 stores in the Netherlands and Belgium feature the 'Samen Minder Verspillen' section, where products nearing their expiration date are offered at reduced prices. In 2023, 36 million products were sold from this section, an increase of 10 million compared to the previous year. The 'Brood van Gister' initiative, offering discounted bread from the previous day, has also significantly reduced waste.
Jumbo is also focusing on technological innovations to combat waste. Last year, the supermarket introduced Borrelbrood, made from leftover La Place bread. Fresh vegetables that can no longer be sold are turned into soups available in Jumbo Food Markets. Additionally, the avocado scanner helps customers determine ripeness without squeezing, reducing fruit waste. These innovations are part of Jumbo's broader goal to cut food waste by half by 2030.
