Abbot Kinney's, which has been part of the natural food company Wessanen for two years, makes vegetable-based alternatives to dairy based on organic coconut milk, oats and almonds. A letter they received at the end of August from the Dutch and Belgian dairy industry (NZO and BCZ) regarding the alleged illegal use of the word 'yoghurt' on their website and social media accounts led them to re-examine the word. The word 'yoghurt' turned out not to be a good match and for that they thanked the dairy lobby in a public letter. Abbot Kinney's now refers to vegetable alternatives to yoghurt as 'yog', without the 'hurt', because their products are free of animal suffering and a lot less painful for the planet. Soon, the fast-growing pioneers will launch even more new dairy alternatives that are sustainable, animal-friendly and tasty.
The conclusion of a report by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is clear: the current food system is not sustainable. Plant-based food is also an important key in a future-proof food transition. Gijs van Maasakkers, co-founder of Abbot Kinney's: "We would like to thank the dairy industry for their letter, because when we started dissecting the word 'yoghurt', we decided to distance ourselves from the 'hurt'. From now on, we will stop using the word 'yoghurt' so that consumers know that they are choosing a plant-based and animal-friendly alternative'.
