Inflation tempered by lower rise in food prices

  • 11 May 2023

Dutch consumers had to pay an average of 5.2 percent more for goods and services in April this year than a year earlier. This is according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. In March, inflation was still 4.4 percent.

Consumer goods and services excluding energy and motor fuels were 7.8 percent more expensive in April than in the same month last year.

Smaller rise in food prices

A positive development is the smaller price increase of food products, which had a downward effect on inflation. In April, food products were 15.9 percent more expensive than in the same month last year, while the price increase in March was 18.4 percent. Meat, vegetables and dairy in particular contributed to this decline.

Smaller price drop energy and gasoline

Energy and gasoline, on the other hand, contributed to an upward effect on inflation. Energy was 32.2 percent cheaper in April than in April last year, while prices were 36.5 percent lower in March. Gasoline was 11.1 percent cheaper this month than in April 2022, while prices were 20.8 percent lower in March. The effect of last April's excise tax cut on motor fuels is no longer affecting inflation.

Finally, euro area inflation rose to 7.0 percent in April from 6.9 percent in March.
