The construction of a new cold store for Ter Maten Pluimveebedrijf in Bunschoten-Spakenburg, NL, was started in 2014 and completed in March 2015. Hörmann supplied and installed overhead and high-speed doors as well as loading technology.
J.A. ter Maten Pluimveebedrijf is a leading processor of poultry meat products which are exported around the world. The production process starts with fresh poultry cuts which are delivered to the company chilled. After quality controls have been performed on the raw materials, they are processed into a wide assortment of end products using state-of-the-art equipment. The finished items are dispatched as fresh products on the same day or immediately frozen for use as convenience products in line with customer requirements.
The Hörmann Group is Europe’s largest supplier of industrial doors and loading technology, of garage doors and of doors, window frames and motorised solutions for homes. The company was previously involved in a project to renovate Ter Maten’s existing building, whereby it replaced all the industrial door systems and loading technology. The customer was so impressed with the results that Hörmann was also asked to supply the industrial door systems for the new cold store. In the preliminary phase Hörmann joined the Ede-based architect S-Tek in discussions with Ter Maten, and they embarked on the new-build project together.
'Putting quality first'
Ter Maten places high demands on the quality of both its products and its cold store. The customer therefore chose the SPU 67T insulated industrial sectional door from Hörmann, which provides good insulation against the loss of heat and cold. The door includes the ThermoFrame frame connection for a thermal break between the frame and the brickwork, double lip seals on both sides of the door, a double seal in the lintel area and bottom-edge sealing. This increases the insulation value by up to 21%.
High-speed doors in the cold store optimise the traffic flow, improve the climate control and save energy. One type of door installed in the cold store is the V5030 SEL RVS. This is a low-noise system which operates quickly and reliably even in a strong draught. The door is fitted with spring-steel wind locks which ensure the necessary stability and increase the resistance to wind load.
Ter Maten’s delivery fleet comprises temperature-controlled truck/trailer combinations and a number of Longer Heavier Vehicles (LHVs). In order to maximise the efficiency of the loading and unloading operations, the company opted for dock levellers with a telescopic lip. Dock levellers from Hörmann are well-designed solutions for precisely compensating the differences in height between various lorry floors and the loading docks. Using a dock leveller, the load can be moved in or out of the lorry in a single horizontal movement. The sturdy steel construction with an anti-twist platform easily compensates for lorry tilting, even if the load is not distributed evenly.
With 2 lifting cylinders and a cylinder for the telescopic lip, the hydraulics is reliable, easy to operate and extremely safe. The dock levellers are fitted with automatic emergency stop valves in the hydraulic cylinders which secure the dock leveller immediately if, for example, a lorry drives away too quickly while a load is still on the platform.
