President Joko Widodo of Indonesia has announced that he will stop the export of palm oil. The export ban was created to still be able to supply his population with affordable oil.
Indonesia is the world's largest palm oil producer (about half of the global supply of palm oil). This unexpected decision has caused a shock on the international edible oil market. This export ban could bring production lines of large manufacturers to a halt. Not only the food industry, but also the cosmetics industry makes extensive use of the oil. And it is expected that consumers worldwide will feel the consequences of these measures.
It is not yet known how long this ban will apply. The president of Indonesia wants to monitor and evaluate the situation until the oil is available in abundance and, above all, affordable for the inhabitants of Indonesia.
