ILT warns waste foundation for not meeting target

  • 11 September 2023

The Netherlands' Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) has issued an official warning to the Packaging Waste Foundation (Stichting Afvalfonds Verpakkingen) for failing to meet the statutory collection target for plastic bottles, constituting a breach of regulations.

Every year, the Packaging Waste Foundation reports on the recycling of packaging materials. As the responsible producer organization tasked with an effective collection system, the Foundation is expected to meet certain standards. Recent figures show that only 68% of plastic bottles are being collected, falling significantly short of the legal goal of 90%.

On September 8, the ILT alerted the Foundation to this shortfall, requesting a comprehensive improvement plan in response. The ILT expects this plan to outline tangible strategies to meet the collection objectives. Furthermore, the ILT has demanded specific data from the Foundation, including detailed collection figures both overall and by brand, as well as information about collection machines and points.

Following an analysis of the provided data, the ILT will evaluate the proposed improvement plan and decide on the necessary follow-up actions.

The set collection target of 90% is not arbitrary. Over 4 million plastic bottles are used daily in the Netherlands. It's crucial that these bottles are collected and recycled, not only to prevent environmental damage but also to reuse valuable resources. Hence, it's imperative that organizations like the Packaging Waste Foundation uphold their responsibilities and meet the established goals.
