Royal Koopmans has announced that, despite the challenging weather conditions of the past year, a harvest of high-quality Dutch wheat has once again been achieved. This success applies to both regular Dutch baking wheat and the sustainable Nedertarwe. The Nedertarwe initiative, which promotes biodiversity and soil quality, plays a key role in Royal Koopmans’ sustainable ambitions and their collaboration with forward-thinking wheat farmers, CZAV, and Natuurmonumenten.
According to Dirk Lodewijk, Managing Director of Royal Koopmans, this achievement is particularly noteworthy. "The demand for Dutch wheat is growing, but currently, only 5% of our bread is made with this wheat. From both an economic and sustainability perspective, that doesn’t make sense. Despite the extreme weather, we have proven that through strong chain collaboration and the expertise of our farmers, we can continue to deliver high-quality wheat."
Ten years ago, it seemed unthinkable to cultivate sustainable Nedertarwe on a large scale. Now, even in one of the wettest years on record, the harvest is delivering excellent quality flour and meal. Jurriaan Visser of CZAV acknowledges that it has been a difficult year for farmers, with lower yields per hectare due to the weather conditions. Nevertheless, they are proud of the quality that has been achieved. According to Royal Koopmans, this result shows that the sector, despite significant challenges, continues to strive for a sustainable and future-proof food system.
