Developments in biotechnology are moving fast. The promises are great: biotechnology can make an important contribution to achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals and European and national objectives in the fields of a circular economy, health and more sustainable food production. In addition, biotechnology makes important contributions to public health.
However, technological developments also raise legal, social, ethical and economic questions. In the short term, this calls for well-considered choices. Currently, government efforts are fragmented and objectives unclear. Responsible exploitation of the opportunities offered by biotechnology urgently requires a long-term vision and direction. COGEM and Health Council call for a cabinet-wide approach involving scientific institutions, social parties and industry.
