HACCP certification stops on 1 January 2021

  • 17 December 2019

On 1 January 2021, the HACCP certification scheme for food safety will cease to exist. This decision was taken by the Stichting Certificatie Veiligheid, Kwaliteit en Duurzaamheid (Safety, Quality and Sustainability Certification Foundation).

Why does certification stop?

The number of HACCP certificates has fallen sharply in recent years. In order to stay ahead of the moment when the number of certificates no longer provides a basis for maintaining the scheme and its associated colleges, it has been decided to phase out the certification scheme in the coming years. There are sufficient alternatives to the HACCP scheme available in the current market.

Phasing out of the HACCP scheme

From 1 January 2020, no new HACCP certificates may be issued. Any certificates issued under the HACCP certification scheme which have not expired, terminated, suspended or revoked by 1 January 2021 shall cease to be valid as of that date.

Alternatives to HACCP

The alternatives to HACCP are: ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, BRC or IFS.
