Groceries 15% more expensive, but increase seems to flatten out

  • 01 June 2023

A recent Consumer Association price survey shows that prices of basic groceries have risen by an average of 15% over a six-month period.

Basic groceries include rice, coffee, milk, butter and potatoes. Interestingly, sugar (+78%), cauliflower (+54%) and bread (6 brown buns +43%) became significantly more expensive. Fortunately, the increase now seems to be levelling off, with some price cuts even visible.

Prices peaked in December 2022 and January 2023, when supermarkets increased the prices of an average of 150 products daily. From February 2023, the number of price increases decreased and more price decreases were observed again. For example, the price of a litre of sunflower oil rose from €1.99 to €3.99 in the past year, only to fall again to €3.09. The packet of private label butter from Albert Heijn and Plus cost €2.65 a year ago, rose to €3.19 and then dropped again to €2.89.
