There is no way to avoid it: in every aspect, people are looking for ways to make things greener, more sustainable or more circular. As a result, new industrial sites are increasingly being delivered without gas and existing sites are being made as climate-neutral as possible. What consequences does this have for the use of steam?
At present, steam is almost always generated by burning fossil gases. By 2050, everyone, including businesses, must be climate-neutral. This means becoming more sustainable and saying goodbye to fossil fuels, at least within 30 years.
At the moment, the government is already stimulating this switch by means of subsidy schemes. In addition, a C02 tax will most likely be introduced within a few years. Sometimes a gas connection is no longer available when you move into a completed building, which means you will have to look for a gas-fired alternative sooner.
Don't forget the buying behaviour of the market. Sustainable production is becoming increasingly important for consumers and therefore also for companies. For a future-proof factory, you should therefore also think about fossil-free steam production.
There are alternatives on the market for gas-free steam production. Electric boilers, for instance, are a green solution because they emit no emissions. It is important to first calculate the required capacity for the desired steam demand together with a steam boiler supplier. The energy supplier can then determine whether the required power can be supplied, and whether the necessary infrastructure is available or can be constructed.
Is replacement by an electric boiler not possible? There are other measures you can take to increase sustainability. Choose a less polluting steam boiler whose flue gases contain no more than 60 milligrams of NOx per normal cubic metre at 3% O2.
Finally, various adjustments to existing steam systems are possible to reduce fuel consumption. Read about these solutions on the website of the RVO (Dutch government agency for entrepreneurship).
Electric boilers, replacing gas-fired boilers, have been included in the Energy List (270104) since 2020, making them eligible for Energy Investment Allowance (EIA).
