This year the first Future Food Design Awards will be presented at the 2017 Dutch Design Week. The award is the foremost international prize intended to encourage and highlight innovative and disruptive designs for sustainable future food.
More and more designers are involved in contributing to a better food system but unfortunately, at international design conferences the emphasis is still too much on purely aesthetic designs. Agri meets Design and The Dutch Institute of Food&Design want to change this, which is why they have initiated the Future Food Design Awards.
Through the Future Food Design Awards the search is now on for change designers, artists and food professionals from all over the world who are exploring the current food system, turning it upside down and redesigning it. From all the entries, three nominees will be selected by an internationally renowned jury, whose members include food designer Marije Vogelzang (NL), journalist Nadine Botha (SA) and artist and philosopher Koert van Mensvoort (NL). The winner will receive an incentive award of €5,000 and will be included in the 2018 Dutch Design Week exhibition. An audience award worth €2,500 will also be presented for the design that receives the most votes.
We are looking for designs that challenge concepts ranging from our eating culture to the food chain. Issues such as managing land use, fresh water reserves, the influence of agriculture on climate and the use of scarce resources are all concerns about food security that are shared worldwide. Themes could also include contemporary domestic table customs, migration, technology and eating habits. The Future Food Design Awards challenges designers to use their vision of the future of our food as a mirror that shows humans how they eat.
The deadline for entering projects and designs that are going to turn the future of food on its head is 30 July 2017. We also invite everyone to join us in keeping an eye out and to tell us about any other potential prize winners. All you have to do is leave the name and email address of the designer on the site.
