FNLI wants clear introduction date for Nutri-Score

  • 17 January 2022

In 2019, Nutri-Score was selected by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport as the best available food choice logo. All parties involved agreed at the time that Nutri-Score would be introduced in the Netherlands in mid-2021. The evaluation of the algorithm on which the logo is based has been delayed. FNLI wants its members to be able to use the logo as soon as possible and therefore calls on the government to quickly come up with a clear and definite introduction date.

The starting point of FNLI and the health organisations involved in the choice of Nutri-Score as a food choice logo was that the algorithm behind it must be brought into line with the dietary guidelines. Under this explicit condition, FNLI embraced this decision. The food industry and consumers have an interest in a national (and preferably European) food choice logo that reflects the dietary recommendations.

The FNLI has always promised to wait for the evaluation by an international scientific committee and the State Secretary's decision before producers can start using Nutri-Score. Supermarkets, the catering and hospitality industries have also done so. This evaluation has been delayed, among other things due to the corona crisis. There is understanding for this situation, but not for the fact that there is still no prospect of a date for an official introduction. The activities of some parties in the market to already start the introduction, in anticipation of the decision, are also against the grain of the parties that keep to the agreements made.

Many food producers are ready to start using Nutri-Score. Therefore, there is a need for clarity in the short term. FNLI therefore calls upon the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport to come up with a concrete and definite date for the official introduction as soon as possible.
