Fish substitutes rarely a good alternative to fish

  • 06 February 2024

Research by the Consumers' Association shows that most fish substitutes do not contain the healthy properties of real fish. Of the 22 alternatives for tuna, fish sticks, and salmon that were examined, only 3 prove to be a full-fledged replacement. This is due to the addition of algae (oil), which contain the same healthy omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) as fish.

The research also indicates that many fish substitutes contain little protein, an essential building block for the body. Additionally, 6 of the products examined contain too much salt, which can lead to higher blood pressure. Only a small number of products contain the healthy omega-3 fatty acids that are important for good health.

Adds nothing

Sandra Molenaar, director of the Consumers' Association, emphasizes that although eating fish also carries risks, such as the presence of heavy metals and dioxins, many fish substitutes do not contain the healthy properties of fish. Manufacturers need to make more efforts to provide truly healthy alternatives that can compete with the nutritional value of fish.
