European biotech gets a boost with new support hub

  • 31 January 2025

The European Commission has taken a significant step in supporting innovative businesses by launching the Biotech and Biomanufacturing Hub. This new hub, launched on January 30, focuses on start-ups and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) active in biotechnology and biomanufacturing. Its goal is to help them scale up their activities and enhance their competitiveness in the EU market.

Access to funding and infrastructure

The hub provides a central platform where businesses can find information about available EU funding, research infrastructures, and networking opportunities. This ranges from pilot and testing facilities to support in protecting intellectual property. Companies are also guided through the process of obtaining permits for new biotech products, such as medicines and food ingredients. Through this structured support, the Commission aims to lower barriers and help businesses gain quicker access to crucial resources.

Support from a specialized taskforce

The Biotech and Biomanufacturing Hub is integrated into the Your Europe portal and is supported by a dedicated taskforce of advisors within the Enterprise Europe Network. This taskforce plays a key role in assisting SMEs in finding suitable solutions for scaling up and growth.

Biotechnology is evolving rapidly and is seen as a pillar for Europe’s green and digital transition. The Commission emphasizes that a strong biotechnology and biomanufacturing sector is essential for making Europe more innovative and competitive. The hub is part of the strategy published in March 2024, which focuses on growth opportunities and easier navigation through complex regulations.
