In a bold move towards ensuring optimal food safety for its citizens, the European Union Commission has unveiled a fresh set of limits for nitrites and nitrates usage in food. Springing from Europe's ambitious Beating Cancer Plan, these revised limits come as a response to concerns surrounding certain carcinogenic substances.
By acting on a comprehensive scientific evaluation from the EFSA, the EU targets not only to curb potential threats from harmful bacteria like Listeria and Salmonella but also to decrease nitrosamine exposure, recognized for its carcinogenic properties.
Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, heading Health and Food Safety, remarked, "Safe food isn't just a desire but a right. Today, as we tighten the reins on nitrites and nitrates in our food, we're cementing this right, reinforcing our commitment to Europe's Beating Cancer Plan." Kyriakides fervently appeals to the food industry, encouraging further reductions whenever feasible.
A crucial aspect of these new regulations is their adaptability, acknowledging the variety in products and production methods throughout the EU. Beyond merely setting standards, they send a resounding message to producers, big and small, emphasizing the urgent need to reconsider nitrite and nitrate content in foods. As the clock ticks, food enterprises have a two-year window to align with these new benchmarks.
