EU ice cream production grew by 5% in 2022

  • 16 August 2023

In 2022, EU's ice cream production surged by 5% to 3.2 billion litres. Germany led this increase, producing 620 million litres, followed closely by France (591 million litres) and Italy (571 million litres). Notably, Germany also boasted the most affordable ice cream at €1.5/litre, while France and Italy had average prices of €1.9 and €2.3 per litre, respectively.

Interestingly, Austria's ice cream was the priciest, averaging at €7.0/litre, with Denmark and Finland following at €4.4 and €2.8 per litre respectively.

On the trade front, EU countries exported 250 million kg of ice cream, valued at €930 million, to non-EU nations. Conversely, they imported 61 million kg, worth €203 million, from outside the EU, marking a 14% decrease from 2021. Exports fell marginally by 2%.

France stood out in exports, shipping 53 million kg, representing 21% of the total extra-EU ice cream exports. Consequently, France was the EU's top ice cream exporter, outpacing the Netherlands (42 million kg; 17% share), Italy (31 million kg; 13%), Germany (28 million kg; 11%), and Belgium (23 million kg; 9%).
