Rubisco Foods has received official confirmation from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) that its protein concentrate, extracted from water lentils, is food-safe. The company had applied for Novel Food status in 2018 and after a lengthy five-year process, the EFSA has finally deemed the product safe for consumption. This positive assessment by the EFSA is a major milestone for Rubisco Foods.
Sjoerd Jansen, General Manager at Rubisco Foods, expressed his excitement and said, "For us, this positive assessment by EFSA is the confirmation we were hoping for. Now we want to move on. We can now further develop our plans." Rubisco Foods already operates from its pilot plant, where it optimizes its production process and produces samples. However, the company plans to focus on expanding its cultivation facilities to increase the production scale and develop a sales market.
Water lentils are a promising crop due to their high protein yield per square meter of land and their high content of essential amino acids that are similar to animal proteins such as whey and egg. Proteins from water lentils are a high-quality ingredient that can be used in dietary supplements, drinks, sports bars, and bakery products.
