Effective energy savings in steam production

  • 06 September 2022

How do you save energy in the production process? As much as 75% of the potential energy savings in the industrial sector are related to steam installations and engines. This is partly because steam is a very common energy carrier in industry and most of it is generated using gas.

The most effective energy-saving measure

In recent years, the Steam Up project has carried out research on a European scale to optimise steam production. The renovation of a steam boiler turned out to be the most effective intervention to save energy. This is partly because many existing steam boilers are too large and too inflexible for the desired production and therefore inefficient.

The replacement of a new steam boiler is often postponed for too long, due to the high purchase costs. Whereas a new boiler works more efficiently and therefore also has lower heating costs. Electric models have been on the market for years, and with rising gas prices and approaching climate targets, they are becoming an increasingly popular choice.

Electric boilers

With the electric generation process, there is no energy loss through the flue gas duct. In the case of gas-fired models, this is around 10% on average. These electric models have also been further developed and improved over the past ten years. The latest generation of Scharff Techniek electric boiler, which was launched in 2022, represents a new performance class in terms of efficiency, power output and space saving.

Financial subsidy schemes

Currently, there are financial schemes that can make the purchase of electric steam boilers cheaper. For example, the purchase and possible adjustments of the electricity connection of an electric steam installation at our initiative is included in the Energy List (270104) in 2021. When you purchase an electric steam boiler, you are eligible for the Energy Investment Allowance (EIA).

Savings through maintenance

Savings are also related to carrying out regular maintenance, and there are a number of less drastic concrete measures that can promote savings. Would you like to read more about this? Then check out the complete blog on the website of Scharff Techniek.
