Dutch fish consumption on the rise

  • 27 October 2022

Dutch people are eating more fish than last year. On average, Dutch people ate 9.5 kg of fish per person. In the ranking of all European countries, this puts the Netherlands in twelfth place; a reasonably good average, although for a country bordering the sea with a lot of fresh, home-grown supply this is quite remarkable. This is according to the research the Nederlands Visbureau commissions annually from GfK. Looking back at the year 2021-2022 shows, among other things, that on average people are also eating more different types of fish, especially outdoors.

Gfk figures

Overall, consumption of fish, seafood and shellfish increased over the year 2021-2022 (June-June). GfK's survey also showed people are eating more different types of fish on average, especially outdoors, while the top five list of most eaten fish species is still headed by salmon, tuna, herring, cod and mussels.

Fish considerably more expensive

An analysis of recent CBS figures shows that in the first seven months of 2022, fish became more than 5 per cent more expensive on average. The overall inflation rate during the same period was 8.5 per cent, while food products became 8.1 per cent more expensive on average during this period.

Within the fish segment, fresh and chilled fish and prepared and preserved fish increased the most in price in the first seven months of 2022. Fresh and chilled fish became 6.5 per cent more expensive compared to the same period in 2021, while prepared and preserved fish increased by 6.8 per cent. Smoked, dried or salted fish rose the least in price (+2.1 per cent).

So far this year, fish prices went up the most in July. Fresh and chilled fish became 11.2 per cent more expensive in July and prepared and canned fish 14.0 per cent. Fresh seafood prices also rose 11.3 per cent in July.
