Decline in number of slaughters Belgium in 2022

In 2022, 25.83 million animals were slaughtered monthly in Belgium. By weight, pigs take the largest share (60%, 877,000 pigs monthly). In numbers, chickens are in the majority, with 24.8 million chickens slaughtered per month.

Over the full year 2022, 755,000 cattle were headed to the slaughterbanks. This is down 2% from the year before. This continues the downward trend that started from 2017.

Notable drop in slaughtering pigs and chickens

In addition, 10.5 million pigs were slaughtered. This is a remarkable decline of 9% compared to 2021. This decline brings the number of pig slaughterings to an even lower level than in the crisis year 2019. For chickens, the figure is 298 million head for 2022. Here, a 2% decline is noticeable.
