Following Vion Food Group’s earlier announcement of its departure from the German market, Danish Crown has now made a similar decision. The Danish meat producer will cease production of fresh packaged meat for the German market.
This decision affects approximately 160 employees at the Oldenburg and Essen facilities. Production is expected to end by the end of February 2025.
Danish Crown has stated that it aims to relocate most of the affected employees to similar roles within the Oldenburg and Essen sites, maintaining the same employment conditions. In the coming weeks, the company plans to consult with the works council to discuss solutions for the workers.
According to Danish Crown, the current approach to fresh meat packaging is no longer competitive. Additionally, the company is facing losses in its convenience products segment, which includes packaged ground meat, schnitzels, and meat burgers supplied to German supermarket chains.
