Confectionery industry to monitor food wastage

  • 17 January 2022

Together with the foundation Together against food waste, Wageningen University, the Ministry of Agriculture, VBZ and a number of members, a pilot project is being conducted to develop a tool to monitor food wastage that is suitable for the entire VBZ community.

Food waste in the confectionery sector

Over the past few months, discussions have taken place between the companies and the Foundation. These have shown that food wastage within the VBZ constituency is relatively low and that much of the wastage is recycled in a high manner, for example into animal feed. However, steps can still be taken here and there. The monitoring tool has now been completed as a result of the information from the pilot companies. VBZ will therefore use various communication channels in the coming months to reach a wider audience with the tool.

Benchmark

When enough companies from the VBZ constituency participate, it will also be possible to benchmark. Both retail and the NVB already have sufficient participating parties to publish a sector representative benchmark compared to sector colleagues. "The confectionery sector cannot be left behind in this. In addition, as Theo Heere and Thijmen Peter indicated during the General Assembly, having data is crucial to ensure that we can exert influence in political The Hague in order to maintain our license to operate. This is one of the many ways in which our industry can position itself by demonstrating that we take our CSR responsibilities seriously," says Robbin Schwidder of VBZ.
