The latest developments in Ukraine and the economic sanctions that followed have major consequences for the Dutch egg chain, reports Anevei (the General Dutch Association of Egg Traders and Egg Product Manufacturers). There are serious market disruptions due to the high energy prices and doubts about the availability of raw materials for animal feed. Anevei considers the situation for the coming period to be uncertain.
The association points out that the contracts concluded, both by poultry farmers with packing stations and by packing stations and egg product manufacturers with their customers, do not cover such a change in market conditions. A fair distribution of the cost increases will be the challenge faced by everyone in the chain, says Anevei.
Anevei reports that a number of large supermarket chains in the Netherlands and Germany are already willing to work towards a solution for the cost increases by adding a surcharge to the agreed price. There are signs that the food industry is also willing to work on solutions.
In addition, various poultry farmers are hesitating about starting new flocks. This may eventually have consequences for the availability of eggs, emphasises Anevei. For organic eggs this might occur earlier, because organic raw materials for animal feed are already scarce.
Anevei pledges to support all efforts to find solutions for the bottlenecks caused by limited availability of feed raw materials and energy.
