After a ban spanning decades, China has finally decided to reopen its market to Russian pork. This historic decision comes after fifteen years of intense negotiations. However, there's a catch: Russia can only export from regions proven to be free from African Swine Fever.
This move marks the end of a prohibition that China implemented in 2008. Despite this breakthrough, some formalities still need to be completed. As a result, the first actual export is only anticipated in 2024.
To date, France is the only European country that has managed to secure a similar agreement with China, where regionalization is key. This principle ensures that meat from infected areas isn't mixed with meat from safe zones.
The growing demand for pork in China, with an increase of 13% in the first half of this year, makes this deal exceptionally lucrative. Russia is thus highly optimistic about this new market opportunity, especially given China's massive pork consumption.
Maxim Reshetnikov, the Russian Minister of Economic Development, expressed his excitement: "China is a global leader in pork consumption. We, therefore, foresee a thriving future for Russian pork exports to this market."
