China has halted the import of beef and sheep meat from the Netherlands due to concerns over the bluetongue virus. This prohibition applies to all ruminants and products derived from them. China has also restricted the import of beef and sheep products from Belgium.
The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) reported that in the Netherlands, at least 2,500 livestock farms have been identified with bluetongue infections. The disease is spread by tiny biting flies, known as midges. Sheep are particularly susceptible to this disease, often succumbing to it. However, cattle, goats, and deer can also become infected.
