Changing the rules to prevent food waste

  • 12 October 2020

Major steps still need to be taken to halve food waste by 2030, but legislation and regulations sometimes hinder this. When entrepreneurs want to make an effort to waste as little as possible and value residual flows optimally, it is important to change those rules - if possible and in a safe way. Wageningen University & Research investigated the feasibility and impact of possible measures. On the basis of the results, the Stichting Samen tegen Voedselverspilling (STV) (Foundation Together against Food Waste) selected a top 10 of priorities, which are now available in a handy and clear fact sheet.

After extensive research by Wageningen University & Research, a broad consultation among stakeholders from the Dutch food system was held and a review by experts took place. In search of those measures with a high impact and high feasibility, the arguments for prioritisation were set out. On that basis, STV selected ten promising priorities to change the rules. Minister Schouten endorsed these top ten in her letter to the House of Representatives. STV and WUR are calling on politicians, the government and businesses to work together to change these rules. Making a circular food system, in which we use all raw materials as effectively as possible, the only logical choice.

Goal

The aim of WUR's initiative is to identify, advise on and remove obstacles, barriers and thresholds in the prevention of food waste. The shorter term goal is to identify and advise on the removal of these barriers at selected hotspots in legislation, regulations and commercial practices.
