Supermarket organisations and foodservice companies in the Netherlands have decided to take further steps in the short term to work with Dutch farmers and market gardeners and civil society organisations to achieve a widely supported sustainability standard, with a good earning model for participating farmers and growers with a focus on fresh produce from Dutch soil.
The sustainability standard must be independent, ambitious, transparent, reliable and accessible to all, with the Beter voor Natuur & Boer path towards a Top Quality Mark being the industry's starting point. The sustainability standard must meet the requirements set by the Dutch environmental organisation Milieu Centraal for Topkeurmerk.
Many supermarkets and food service companies often already work with farmers and horticulturists for a long time in chains where producers and buyers know each other. This is necessary to give the farmers and growers involved adequate compensation for extra attention to nature, the environment and animal welfare.
In this way, the Dutch Food Trade wants to contribute to the transition to a new and future-proof food system in the Netherlands.
