Bioplastics are popular at a time when people are worried about litter and environmental damage. But the question is: Can bioplastics live up to their green image? And are they suitable or not for composting? There is still a lack of clarity about these two issues. This is due to the incorrect use of different terms and definitions, but also to the incorrect or incomplete claims made by some with regard to the compostability of plastics.
The Dutch Association of Organic Residues (BVOR) has published a fact sheet on these subjects. This fact sheet lists a number of definitions and indicates how different types of bioplastics should be separated and processed.
