Beyond Meat faces 24% decline in product sales

  • 11 August 2023

As the foodworld continually evolves, Beyond Meat remains committed to pioneering the plant-based journey. But even industry leaders are not immune to market fluctuations, as evidenced in their Q2 2023 financial report which reveals a significant 23.9% decrease in product sales volume.

Recording a total revenue of $102.1 million for the quarter, the company faced a notable 30.5% drop year-over-year. Alongside the stark decline in sales volume, a separate challenge emerged with an 8.6% reduction in the net revenue per pound of product sold. Yet, it wasn't all about navigating challenges. The quarter also brought forth a silver lining as the company marked a gross profit of $2.3 million, attributable to strategic cost reductions and beneficial accounting changes.

CEO Ethan Brown commented, “This quarter presented a mixed bag of challenges and successes. While we grappled with the substantial decrease in sales volume and revenue per pound, we've also identified and acted upon areas of operational efficiency, reflecting in our improved gross profit.”

Diving deeper into the performance metrics, Beyond Meat's U.S. market presence saw substantial contractions, particularly in the retail and foodservice channels with decreases of 38.5% and 45.4%, respectively. On the global stage, the company observed a 15.6% decrease in the retail channel, whereas the international foodservice channel demonstrated resilience, curtailing its decrease to a mere 0.9%.

In anticipation of the year ahead, Beyond Meat projects a cautious outlook with net revenues estimated between $360 million to $380 million for 2023, aligning strategies with the current market realities.
