Arla Foods brings first climate-neutral dairy to market

  • 01 March 2021

With the introduction of Arla organic climate neutral, Arla Foods brings the first climate neutral dairy to the Dutch market. To this end, Arla Foods is reducing greenhouse gas emissions at various points in the chain. In addition, the dairy cooperative is offsetting all greenhouse gases from Arla organic climate neutral from cow to refrigerator. To achieve this, the company invests in projects that focus on planting trees and protecting rainforests. This makes Arla organic the first dairy with the Climate Neutral Group's independent 'Climate Neutral Product' label.

Arla Foods wants to make dairy without negative impact on the climate. The company's ambition is to have reduced 30% of its emissions by 2030 and to be fully net climate neutral by 2050. As the market leader in organic dairy, the dairy cooperative wants to have reduced 30% emissions with Arla organic as early as 2028 compared to 2015, putting Arla organic in the lead. While Arla Foods is working to reduce greenhouse gases, the company is offsetting the remaining emissions from cow to refrigerator of all Dutch Arla organic products, about 52,000 tons of CO2 equivalents, in 2021, through certified projects. That's about the annual emissions of 2,600 households.

Transparency about what climate neutral means

Consumers have the right to know what dairy products they are buying. That is why Arla Foods clearly states on the front of the packaging that these are climate-neutral products by reducing and offsetting the emissions of all greenhouse gases. On the back of the packaging and on the website there is further explanation of what climate neutral is and how the company compensates.
