AI gives a boost to Unilever’s ice cream production

  • 30 January 2025

With 35 factories and around 3 million freezers worldwide, Unilever operates an extensive ice cream supply chain. The weather plays a crucial role in this. In a European summer month, a temperature increase of just 1°C can significantly impact sales figures. To respond to this seasonal demand, Unilever relies heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools.

Better forecasts, more efficient production

AI-driven weather data analysis helps Unilever improve its sales forecasts. In Sweden, this has led to a 10% increase in forecast accuracy. “Thanks to AI, we know where and how much we need to sell, and which freezer our products should be placed in,” says Elif Cakir, responsible for long-term planning within the ice cream supply chain.

The improved forecasts ensure production lines can be adjusted in time to meet expected demand, resulting in cost savings. AI optimises production performance by monitoring real-time variables, reducing waste of valuable raw materials like vanilla and cocoa by up to 10%.

From freezer to truck: smarter logistics

In addition to production, AI plays a key role in distribution. When unexpected weather changes occur, Unilever can quickly shift inventories to areas with higher demand. AI-powered route planners optimise refrigerated transport, improving both efficiency and energy consumption.

A key step in this transformation is the global rollout of AI-enabled freezers. With 100,000 of these smart freezers already in operation, Unilever gains real-time stock insights. In countries like Turkey, the US, and Denmark, this has resulted in sales increases of 8%, 12%, and 30%, respectively.

Through this digital transformation, Unilever not only optimises production and distribution but also enhances the flexibility and sustainability of its ice cream supply chain.
