The dairy companies A-ware and Fonterra want to significantly expand the production location along the A7 in Heerenveen. A-ware wants to increase cheese production, particularly by expanding the product range. The production capacity is to increase from 200,000 to 300,000 tonnes per year. The dairy group also wants to start producing butter, milk powder and lactoferrin. Together with Fonterra, the company has submitted a permit application for the plans.
A-Ware can currently process about 2 billion litres of milk a year in Heerenveen. The planned expansion will involve cooperation with Fonterra, a New Zealand company with which it has a long-term contract. Fonterra operates a factory in Heerenveen for the production of dairy ingredients. Here, cheese whey is processed into whey components for sports, dietary and hospital food, among other things. The whey is purchased from A-ware.
