Since 22 January 2018, Too Good To Go has been effectively combating food waste in the Netherlands. The app now has a community of more than 800,000 registered app users who can go to more than 2,000 affiliated locations throughout the Netherlands for food that threatens to remain by closing time. Today, the one millionth meal has been saved. That's 1 million meals that have ended up on a plate instead of in the garbage can. Profit for the environment, entrepreneurs and consumers.
Every year, between 1.7 and 2.5 million tonnes of food are wasted in the Netherlands. Food is thrown away throughout the food chain, from farm to fork. A problem with an unprecedented burden on the environment. Not only the food is lost, but also everything that was needed to produce that food: water, farmland, manpower and transport. By using Too Good To Go, more and more entrepreneurs close their day without waste and consumers enjoy a sustainable meal at a good price. But the environment is the biggest winner. By saving 1 million meals, Too Good To Go prevents CO₂ emissions of approximately 2.5 million kg. This is equal to the amount of energy needed to charge more than 300 million smartphones*.
This year, Too Good To Go will further expand its head office in Amsterdam to devote more attention to initiating a movement against food waste. Joost Rietveld, Managing Director: "We have been overwhelmed by the number of Dutch people who want to take action against food waste via the app. We want to continue this movement, which is why we will be devoting more attention to information, education and inspiration in the near future. In this way, we hope not only to get the users of Too Good To Go moving, but that the whole of the Netherlands will take action. That's the next step that I'm really looking forward to." Today, as a first step in this mission, Too Good To Go is launching a new section on its website: a specially designed knowledge database full of information about food waste at home and in companies, the political impact on the problem and teaching materials for pupils and students of all ages.
