Resumption of seaweed company Waddenwier

  • 16 July 2020

Where it was previously known that Van Rijsselberghe had to stop his company Waddenwier, he still managed to realise a relaunch. Marc Van Rijsselberghe announced the news himself this week. "We are facing a serious salination problem in the world. Seaweed is a fantastic product that can bind CO2 from the air and supply a fresh product from salt water. It is a unique opportunity for the region to develop further. I am extremely happy that Waddenwier can be continued in a positive way and that we can continue to develop, grow and produce. "According to Marc van Rijsselberghe.

Growing seaweed with fresh saline spring water from the ground.

Waddenwier grows the seaweed on Texel in large basins from which it can be harvested daily. The seaweed is of excellent quality, partly because we use fresh salty spring water. This gives it a delicious truffle-like flavour. Most of it is dried and then packaged for consumption.

Van Rijsselberghe: "It would have been a shame to let all this go to waste. The basis is strong and I still have a lot of ambition with this product. Seaweed contains a high concentration of Omega fatty acids and is a good source of fibre, proteins and carbohydrates. With our unique cold drying method it is dried at a very low temperature. This keeps the natural trace elements and minerals in the product. We look forward to the future with full confidence".

Collaboration

The development continues. Waddenwier has teamed up with different partners for different projects. For the Port4innovation project Waddenwier is working on a fast (and feasible) application of seaweed products as a foodstuff and also for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. In addition, Waddenwier participates in the EU project Interreg North Sea region SalFar, together with the Salt Farm Foundation, where seaweed is being used as a fertilizer product for the cultivation of salt-tolerant crops.

Good news for seaweed fans: Recently a webshop has been launched for consumers, wholesalers and restaurants: www.zeewiervantexel.nl.
