Jan Zandbergen supplier Moving Mountains

  • 22 January 2019

Jan Zandbergen will be the exclusive supplier of the vegetable burger of Moving Mountains Foods in Europe (with the exception of the United Kingdom). Vegetable proteins are becoming increasingly popular. This is the first time that Jan Zandbergen has introduced a vegetable product onto the market. For Moving Mountains it is the biggest deal the company has ever made. With this partnership, Moving Mountains Burger will be able to access the menus of thousands of restaurants, cafés and fast food companies throughout Europe via Jan Zandbergen's distribution network.

British consumers have long been familiar with the Moving Mountains Burger. The company has received a lot of media attention and has recently announced that within one year, the burgers will be served in more than 1,000 restaurants in the UK. The burgers have been praised by The Sun as 'best ever veg patties' by The Independent as 'The best vegan burger in the UK', The Times says 'There's a definite meaty pickness to it' and National Geographic calls it 'Blameless Burgers'. After the success and rapid growth in the UK, expansion into the rest of Europe is a logical step for the company.

Simeon Van Der Molen, CEO of Moving Mountains
"A period of strong growth is dawning now that the Moving Mountains Burger is available in more than 1,000 restaurants in the UK. Now that we are part of Jan Zandbergen's vast distribution network, outlets across Europe can take both their meat products and their vegetable products from the same location, reaching the market faster.  Working with one of Europe's largest meat companies is an important part of our growth strategy as the UK's relationship with the rest of the world is about to change.

Peter-Paul Zandbergen, CEO of Jan Zandbergen
"We offer quality meat from the best regions of the world to our European customers in the foodservice and retail markets. We respond daily to trends and developments in the meat sector and see a huge shift in customer interest and demand. This is the first time we have supplied vegetable meat such as Moving Mountains and we are proud to be able to support a start-up British company that is a leader in vegetable innovation. As a family business, we are extremely conscious of our future generations. It is our responsibility to work together to preserve and restore the environment. By starting with vegetable meat products, we have the opportunity to respond to the changing market while making a positive contribution to the environment."

Jochem Versloot, managing director of Jan Zandbergen
"One of our core values is that we always aim for the best product. Moving Mountains delivers the best product thanks to the development of one of the most realistic meat replacements in the world. After tasting this burger, we were convinced that we wanted to work with Moving Mountains to enter the vegetable protein market. With as much as 25 grams of vegetable protein per 6 oz burger (about 170 grams), an unparalleled texture, juiciness and bite, we believe this will be the product of 2019!"

For more than three years, Moving Mountains has been developing its vegetable burger that sizzles, smells, bleeds and tastes like real meat. A team of prominent scientists, chefs and farmers and more than 500 test recipes were used to create the final product. According to the company, this will be one of the most influential inventions of this century in the field of nutrition.

Every burger is rich in vegetable proteins (the 6 oz, or 170 gram, burger contains 25 grams of vegetable protein), is vegan and free of antibiotics and hormones. The main ingredients of the Moving Mountains Burger are oyster mushrooms, peas, wheat, soy protein and oats. Red beetroot juice ensures that the burger really 'bleeds', and thanks to the added vitamin B12, the burger is a source of essential nutrients. "The burger's production requires significantly less land and water, and generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions than the production of ordinary meat," adds Simeon Van der Molen, founder of Moving Mountains.

The burger is not only focused on the growing number of vegetarians and flexitarians, but is also suitable for vegans and will even taste good to meat lovers. Moving Mountains is working hard on the development of several other alternative meat products.  The goal is to produce products that are similar in appearance, taste, smell and bite compared to animal meat and that everyone will enjoy

The burgers are already available, so companies in the foodservice sector interested in the Moving Mountains Burger can place their order via Jan Zandbergen. The burgers are currently supplied in three different weight categories: 2 oz (about 56.7 grams), 4 oz (about 113.4 grams) and 6 oz (about 170.1 grams).
