Healthier meat range at Jumbo

  • 18 October 2018

Jumbo has significantly reduced the amount of salt in its fresh meat products. Hundreds of popular products - from hamburgers, bacon slices and saté skewers to sausages, minced meat and slavery - have been scrutinised. The total fresh meat range now contains on average 20 percent less salt. This means about 27,000 kilos less salt per year. In addition, allergens* have been extracted from products wherever possible and the number of e-numbers has been reduced. The improvements will be implemented in the near future with even more products in the fresh meat shelf. Jumbo has worked hard on this in recent years and is continuously working on new objectives in the field of tasty and healthy eating.

Jumbo has set itself the goal of reducing the amount of salt in its total fresh meat products to a maximum of 1.25 grams per 100 grams by the end of 2019. Jumbo bases this on its own standards that go beyond the agreements made within the sector. Meanwhile, a large part of the range of meat on the shelves already contains much less salt. Artificial flavour enhancers have also been replaced by natural ingredients in these products and, where possible, the products have been made allergen-free. These changes are all part of Jumbo's commitment to help customers and inspire them to make informed and healthier choices in the area of food.

"Making our range ever healthier is very important to us," says Olaf de Boer, Jumbo Executive Director Buying & Merchandising. "In our meat shelf, we achieved a good result in reducing salt and e-numbers. We have reviewed the entire meat range and are now taking further steps, in cooperation with our suppliers, based on new targets. We are looking at how we can make the composition of our products even better. With better ingredients, as few allergens as possible and where possible with less salt and unnecessary additives. That's quite a challenge, because it's different for each product. For processed products with marinades and spices, for example, this is easier than with other products. It is an ongoing process in which we regularly perform taste tests, because we strive for a healthier range without making concessions to taste.

*The fresh meat products are virtually free of the 14 legal allergens. Allergens such as milk, wheat, mustard, celery, soy and peanut are only used functionally. For example, in the case of a saté schnitzel.
