Food and online sales are growing rapidly

According to Statistics Netherlands, retail turnover in August 2018 was 3.4 percent higher than in August 2017. The sales volume grew by 3.2 percent. Both the food sector and the non-food sector achieved higher turnover. In addition, online turnover increased by almost 20 percent.

The turnover figures have been adjusted for the composition of shopping days in August. Sales are higher on some days of the week than on other days. Without this correction, retail turnover was 4.5 percent higher than in August 2017.

Food turnover over 3% higher

In August 2018, turnover in food, drinks and tobacco shops was 3.1 percent higher than in August 2017. The sales volume grew by 2.1 percent. Supermarkets converted 4 percent more, while the turnover of specialized stores shrank by more than 3 percent.

Online turnover 20% higher

Online turnover in August 2018 was almost 20 percent higher than in the same month a year earlier. Webshops generated almost 14 percent more turnover. The main activity of web shops is online sales. The online turnover of stores whose sales via the Internet is a secondary activity (multi-channelers) grew by almost 32 percent.

Also non-food stores plusst

Revenue from non-food stores grew by 2.1 percent in August. Volume (revenue adjusted for price changes) was 2.4 percent higher than twelve months previously. Turnover in furniture and home furnishings was approximately the same as in August 2017.
