Corona infections among Vion employees

  • 06 May 2020

Food company Vion, with branches in the Netherlands and Germany, has employees who have tested positive for corona in both countries. Corona infections were found in 26 residents of a housing unit for migrant workers in Velp. Some of these residents work at Vion in Scherpenzeel. The GGD Gelderland-Midden started extensive source and contact research immediately after the first infection. Vion participates fully in the research and also follows all advice issued by the RIVM. During the investigation we can make no further announcements. According to the GGD Gelderland-Midden, the 26 infected migrant workers have gone into isolation. These people must be or remain free of symptoms for 72 hours and then they are allowed to go home again. For the other 25 residents from the same complex, the virus has not been detected in the investigation, but they must remain in quarantine for two weeks. During the weekend and this morning the other employees in Scherpenzeel were informed by the management. Production is running normally at the site.

At the Vion site in Bad Bramstedt in northern Germany, slaughter was temporarily stopped because 51 of 115 employees tested positive. Here, too, the employees were tested at their home address. In 90% of the people tested positive, no symptoms have been observed so far. At this time of the year, the supply of cattle for slaughter is less, which is why Vion Bad Bramstedt has temporarily stopped the slaughter, but the boning activities will still be carried out this week. The slaughtering will be restarted on Monday May 11th.
