ABN AMRO: Attention to brexit remains important

  • 06 July 2020

The attention of the Dutch entrepreneur for the brexit slackens, observes VNO-NCW in De Financiële Telegraaf. Of the companies that have a trading relationship with the United Kingdom (UK), 60 percent are preparing for a British departure from the European Union (EU). Last year this was still 76 percent, according to a survey by research bureau Kantar.

With the arrival of corona, other problems seem to be of secondary importance. Slightly less than half of the companies with direct relationships with the UK say that they are reasonably or very well informed about developments surrounding the brexit. Last year this was still the case for no less than 85 percent of those companies.

The end of the transition period is now approaching. Recently, the United Kingdom allowed a deadline agreed in the 'Withdrawal Agreement' to expire by which the transition period could be extended. This does not mean that extension is now impossible, but it does indicate that the brexit weighs heavily on Boris Johnson. With the expected rapid expiry of the transition period and the existing uncertainty about which agreements will be made, it remains important for Dutch companies to keep the brexit in sight.
